School Programs & Farmyard Visits

Since 1978, Shelburne Farms has offered seasonal one-day field trips for preschool-8th grade students and their teachers. These include:

  • School-year programs at the Farm;
  • School-year programs at a site in your community;
  • Children’s Farmyard visits, mid-May to mid-October. Info: cwright@shelburnefarms.org. Registration for these visits is accepted on a rolling basis. Register now.

The registration period for 2015/16 School Programs is now closed. If you have not yet applied and are interested in learning more about opportunities for the 2015/16 school year, please email school.programs@shelburnefarms.org. We will try our best to accommodate your school!

  • Active in Winter/Tracking - Outreach

    Active in Winter
    Winter

    Investigate your schoolyard or community for signs of active animals in winter. Together, we will follow track patterns in search of stories in snow. Investigate the adaptations and survival techniques that allow animals to stay active in winter. Develop track identification and observational skills while exploring prints, patterns, and places.

    Spring

    Connect to the world beneath your feet! Explore soil properties, composition, and the connection between soil and all living things! Meet worms, learn about their structure and function, and explore how they contribute to soil health. Consider how garden soils differ from forest and field soils and the reasons why we are not living in a tomato planet!

    Spring

    Spring marks the opening of the Farmyard, with all its new arrivals. From chicks to lambs, and from calves to piglets, the farm's newborns are sure to make a visit to the Farmyard a memorable experience.

  • Spring Time on the Farm

    Spring Time on the Farm
    Spring

    PK-1st: Investigate what is happening as the Farm awakens to spring's warmer days. See Tomie de Paula's Charlie Needs a Cloak come alive! Meet and interact with lambs and ewes while exploring the importance of wool. Together we will wash, dry, card, spin, and felt wool to follow the cycle of sheep to mitten. Participate in animal chores and make observations of the flock!

    2-3rd: Explore a Vermont dairy farm! Visit our milking parlor, calving barn, feed alley, and manure pit to undertand the process and life cycle of cows! Milk a cow and determine which products come from cows. Transform cream into butter and learn about the cheese making process.

    Allow inquiry to guide your spring exploration around the natural areas in your community. Students will examine animal adaptations and search for spring ephemerals as we find signs of spring and cycles all around! This trip can be adapted to include a service learning component through Winooski Valley Park District.

    Explore the pond and forest ecosystem! Students will experience spring at the pond and in the forest through investigation of the insect and amphibian life cycles. Discover how creatures adapt to eating, moving, and surviving in their watery and forest worlds.

    Investigate the science and wonder behind maple sugaring. Follow the process from tapping to tasting. Identify and tap a sugar maple, gather sap, and visit the sugar maker in the sugar house! Explore the water, tree life, and sugaring cycles throughout the day.

    Strengthen community in your classroom while creating a pizza together! Students collaborate to make pizza from scratch while exploring cycles on the farm — grind wheat berries, milk a cow, and harvest toppings! The program culminates in a pizza celebration!

    Follow the nutrient cycle in built and natural systemt to discover the functions and characteristics of wetlands. Visit our dairly to consider how nutrients are imported and exported while evaluating the integral role wetlands play in maintaining a healthy ecosystem in a time of changing climate. This trip can be adapted to include a service learning component through Winooski Valley Park District.
