Position Title:  Seasonal Tractor Shuttle Driver and Visitor Liaison

Supervisor: Children's Farmyard Manager

Employee Status:  Seasonal, Part Time hours

Location: On-site at the farm in Shelburne, VT

Employment dates:  May 1, 2024 - October 20, 2024     

Pay rate: $16/hour

Work Schedule: Part time including weekends and holidays (potential to be combined with Tour Wagon Driver positions for increased hours)

Who We’re Looking for

We are seeking seasonal Tractor Shuttle Drivers and Visitor Liaisons to transport farm visitors from the Welcome Center to the Farm Barn while creating a welcoming and informative experience for guests. The Farm Barn is home to our cheesemaking operation and the Children’s Farmyard (CFY). The CFY is the largest of the nonprofit's many public programs and is open to the public and school groups seven days a week from May through October. 

What You’ll Do

  • Drive a tractor pulling two hitched wagons in tandem on a designated loop and schedule to shuttle visitors between the Welcome Center/ Farm Store and the Farm Barn / Children’s Farmyard. Shifts are approximately 4 hours. 
  • Greet and assist visitors in a warm, welcoming, and professional manner upholding excellent guest services at all times.
  • Kindly answer questions and address concerns that arise from visitors of all ages.
  • Hear and respond to radio communication over running tractor while wearing a headset.
  • Safely communicate information to the Welcome Center staff, farmyard staff, and other farm personnel via radio while operating the tractor.
  • Lift and lower bottom portion of stairs on each wagon at every shuttle stop. 
  • Responsible for fueling the tractor with diesel gas which requires hitching and unhitching the wagons to the tractor.
  • Complete and keep up-to-date tractor maintenance logs and report any issues or concerns to the farmyard manager.
  • Inform guests at the Welcome Center of the tractor shuttle schedule and keep a timely schedule.
  • Provide information to visitors about the Shelburne Farms campus, history, products, and services.
  • Attend orientations, training, and meetings as required. 
  • Support a continuous effort to build and sustain a welcoming working and learning environment for all program participants, guests, and staff.

Core Qualifications 

  • Must have a valid driver’s license with the following requirements:

    • No more than one at-fault accident, two minor moving violations, or two non-moving violations within the past year AND
    • Zero major moving violations within the past seven years (examples: driving with suspended/invalid license, DUI, reckless driving, speed contests). No more than one major moving violation in the past 10 years.
  • Able to hear and respond to radio communication over running tractor while wearing a headset.
  • Able to maintain safe driving conditions for all farm visitors on the shuttle and along the farm walking trails.
  • Able to drive the tractor while sharing the farm roads with other farm equipment, farm and personal vehicles, and walkers. 
  • Have a strong desire to work with a wide variety of visitors in a busy guest service setting.
  • Positive attitude and a willingness to be a contributing member of a team, while remaining flexible to changing schedules or program needs.
  • Willingness to receive feedback, grow personally and professionally, and develop new skills.
  • Commitment to the values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion
  • Valid First Aid and CPR certification (training provided).
  • A completed background check is a condition of employment.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

  • Hear and respond to radio communication over running tractor while wearing a headset.
  • Mount and dismount the tractor at every stop throughout your shift. 
  • Lift and lower the stairs on both wagons at every stop that weigh approximately 30 lbs. 
  • Outdoor work environment with varied weather conditions.
  • Move over uneven terrain.
  • Assist visitors to the farm in stepping up and down from the shuttle wagons.
  • Move and carrying items weighing up to 50 lbs.

  • Six (6) days (total of 48 hours) of paid Sick Time for all seasonal employees, regardless of average hours worked/week and length of seasonal time working on the farm.
