Welcome, preK–12 and non-formal educators! The Shelburne Farms Institute for Sustainable Schools offers transformative programs and resources for you and your students to help inspire an emerging generation of changemakers.

Our Approach

Education for Sustainability links knowledge, inquiry, and action while cultivating a sense of joy and wonder for the world around us. Our offerings for you–and for your students–focus on equity-centered food systems and climate change education, community and place-based learning, and youth engagement and action to help learners build healthier communities and a healthier planet, now and in the future.

Education for Sustainability is about re-centering learning on relationships—between people, place, and the natural world. It's a way of teaching that nurtures agency, empathy, and action. In this moment of ecological and social tipping points, we can't afford to educate for anything less than transformation. EFS empowers students to see themselves not just as learners, but as changemakers. And for me, it's become a compass—helping me realign my teaching with what matters most.
