Preservation Trust of Vermont Award for Coach Barn
We're honored to share that Shelburne Farms and SAS Architects have received a Preservation Trust of Vermont 2026 Preservation Award for the Coach Barn Rehabilitation Project. These awards recognize individuals, organizations, and businesses that have made special contributions to preserving Vermont’s historic architecture, downtowns and village centers.
Together, SAS Architects and the Shelburne Farms project leadership team re-envisioned the Coach Barn as a historic, accessible, year-round, sustainably designed space that would not only host learning experiences but actively contribute to them. The challenge was to honor the building’s past—its historic fabric—while adapting it for the future with more sustainable features. From fall 2024 to fall 2025, SAS managed this extensive work.
Previously, SAS has guided campus facilities planning and many building projects for Shelburne Farms, including extensive repairs of the Breeding Barn, staff housing, and improvements at the Shelburne Farms Inn, Farm Barn, and Welcome Center.
The year-long rehabilitation of the Coach Barn was the result not only of the vision, direction, and expertise of SAS, but the skills and dedication of countless craftspeople and tradespeople. This award honors all of them.
With the rehabilitation complete, the Coach Barn is now an even more inspirational space for gathering and learning.
